Introduction

File storage and transfer has repeatedly shown its vulnerabilities in both security and privacy and this problem is amplified when storing one’s files and information in the cloud. In an effort to find a final solution to this problem, decentralized cloud storage was created. Highly skilled individuals and organizations are researching different solutions to harness this new technology. Opal is developing an experimental system that will allow individuals the ability to: upload, transfer, and decrypt files using the Opal Core wallet through the Storj MetaDisk api.

Opal’s solution is to build a transmission layer on top of Storj’s existing MetaDisk infrastructure. This system will allow a user to encrypt a file using the encryption system used with Opacity to allow a user to encrypt a file with another user’s private key, while only possessing their public key.

This resembles PGP’s public key encryption, except Opacity’s file transfers allow for encryption with the EDCSA. Once the file is encrypted with the receiver’s private key, the file is uploaded to Storj (a distributed file sharing network that serves as our offchain secure method of file storage). The link to download the file is then sent to the receiver via OpacityEM, at which point the user can then download and decrypt the file with their private key.
